About the Exam

Practice questions from the PMP exam as it ran until July 2026, based on the 2021 Exam Content Outline (People 42%, Process 50%, Business Environment 8%) and the PMBOK Guide 6th and 7th editions. PMI replaced this version on 9 July 2026 with a new exam aligned with the PMBOK Guide 8th edition, covered by PMP: Project Management Professional (PMBOK 8). Most scenario questions here are still good practice for the new exam, but the domain weights and some terminology follow the old outline.

QuestionQ1

VerifiedProcess

A project manager is assigned to a project that is part of a program. The project’s high-level requirements are known, but the priorities of certain requirements are uncertain because they depend on other pipeline projects within the program.

How should the project manager prepare for the project’s next steps?

Explanation

Program planning uses a high-level roadmap with milestones and preliminary estimates based on the information available, including applicable historical information. Known high-level requirements can therefore be prioritized and estimated at the milestone level while interproject dependencies and priorities are refined as program information becomes available.

QuestionQ2

VerifiedProcess

A project manager has been tracking impediments discussed with the team during daily meetings. The risk register keeps growing, while only a small number of impediments have been mitigated.

What should the project manager do?

Explanation

Impediments should be evaluated for their impact and prioritized so that the critical blockers affecting project objectives receive prompt attention and an appropriate removal or mitigation strategy. Sponsor involvement is appropriate for escalated impediments that require sponsor authority, but criticality must be established first.

QuestionQ3

VerifiedProcess

While executing a project in an operations function, the project manager encounters scope changes and a delay in delivering critical tasks.

How should the project manager handle this situation?

Explanation

Scope changes and their schedule effects must be managed through formal change control. Initiating a change request enables the proposed scope modification and timeline adjustments to be assessed, approved by the designated authority, and incorporated into the project baselines.

QuestionQ4

VerifiedProcess

While executing the project, a project manager discovers that the budget at completion has changed significantly and is higher than expected. What should the project manager do?

Explanation

A significant adverse cost variance calls for root-cause analysis of project performance so the source of the variance can be understood and appropriate corrective action determined. Updating the original budget solely by the current cost variance bypasses that analysis and baseline change control.

QuestionQ5

VerifiedProcess

A customer is worried about the time needed to finish a project and asks the project team to reduce the number of iterations needed to complete the product.

Which approach should the project manager use?

Explanation

Prioritizing deliverables by business value ensures that the most important capabilities are completed first. Frequent releases make those capabilities available to the customer earlier, reducing time to realized value without arbitrarily shortening the iterative delivery process.
