Retention Lock Governance on Dell PowerProtect Data Domain protects backup data from deletion or modification for a defined retention period, meeting the requirement that no backups be deleted. Unlike Retention Lock Compliance—which enforces an immutable retention period that cannot be altered by anyone until it expires—Governance mode permits authorized administrators to modify or shorten the retention period (or remove the lock) when appropriate, such as after a legal hold is lifted. This flexibility is the defining difference between Governance and Compliance retention lock modes on Data Domain systems.
