For a given VLAN, spanning tree elects as root the switch with the lowest Bridge ID. The effective Bridge ID values shown are 24596 for SW1, 28692 for SW2, 32788 for SW3, and 64000 for SW4. Because 24596 is the lowest value, SW1 is elected the root bridge for VLAN 20. Equal link speeds affect root-port and path-cost decisions after the root is chosen, but they do not change which switch wins the root election.
