Tableau Desktop License Reporting is disabled by default and is enabled on Tableau Server through Tableau Services Manager by setting features.DesktopReporting to true, then applying the pending configuration changes and restarting Tableau Server.

Centralized, consistent access control is achieved by placing the workbooks in a project whose permissions are locked at the project level. Locked project permissions are enforced for all assets in that project, and workbook owners cannot alter those permission rules; Tableau specifically recommends managing permissions locked at the project level rather than on individual content.

Tableau Server’s default low-free-disk-space alert thresholds are 20% remaining disk space for a Warning alert and 10% remaining disk space for a Critical alert. The critical threshold is lower because it represents a more severe shortage of available disk space.

Recommended data sources can be based on published data sources used by other people in the organization whose usage behavior resembles that of the current user. Tableau also adds certified data sources to recommended data sources; certification is used to identify trusted data.

A File Store should be decommissioned before it is deleted so that its data can be safely handled as part of retirement, preventing unintended data loss. Restoring, restarting, and reconfiguring do not provide that deletion safeguard.

Whether a view is slow every time it is opened or only at certain times separates a workbook-specific performance issue from server-load or traffic-related performance variation. Tableau guidance identifies a particular view that loads slowly regardless of when it is viewed as an indicator that the workbook should be optimized, whereas slow load times associated with high session counts can indicate user traffic is slowing the server.

The Tableau REST API provides Create Group and Create Project operations. The tabcmd utility includes creategroup and createproject commands, and Tableau Server’s browser interface allows administrators to create groups and projects. Tableau Services Manager (tsm) is for server configuration and administration, not for creating site-level groups or projects.

The Recommendations Trainer and View Recommendations Trainer are non-extract background tasks. The Background Tasks for Non Extracts administrative view lets administrators track these tasks and their performance while Tableau Server updates recommendation data.

The 3:00 PM extract refresh and 5:00 PM subscription run during the interval in which users experience poor responsiveness. Moving those background tasks to after business hours prevents them from competing with interactive workloads. Tableau documents that Backgrounder jobs can use significant server resources and recommends scheduling extract work for times when the server is not busy.

VizQL Server processes interactive view requests by loading and rendering views and by computing and executing their queries. Consequently, browser-based interaction with a visualization can place substantial resource demand on VizQL Server.

For a Tableau Server installation on a computer with fewer than eight physical cores, the default configuration reduces the installed process count to one instance of each process.

Tableau Server subscriptions are delivered on a schedule. Users can select a subscription schedule established by an administrator, or—when custom schedules are enabled for the site—define their own custom subscription schedule. Share links and embed code only provide ways to access or display content, not ways to schedule subscriptions.

An Unlicensed Tableau Server user cannot sign in. A site role establishes the maximum capabilities a user can have, so a Publisher permission on a project cannot override the Unlicensed role to permit publishing or API access.

Tableau Server stores its product-key licensing information in FlexNet trusted storage. Tableau documents using serveractutil -view to obtain the key information located there.

Tableau data-driven alerts use a threshold on a continuous numeric axis. Numeric bins and discrete numeric axes are unsupported, and Gantt charts are excluded. Tableau: Send Data-Driven Alerts from Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server

Publishing to Tableau Server requires network access to the server and a site role that allows publishing. Creator and Explorer (Can Publish) roles permit publishing, whereas Explorer, Viewer, Read Only, and Unlicensed roles do not. File Store synchronization handles replication of extracts and is not itself a general publishing authorization requirement; permissions managed by the owner likewise does not inherently prohibit publishing.

Creating and editing sites is a server-level administrative function. The Schedules page, where schedules are created, is accessible only to Tableau Server Administrators. User management and project-access administration can be delegated at the site level.

Tableau Server’s Data Engine uses Hyper to create data extracts, refresh extracts, and process extract queries. Tableau documents this process as creating data extracts and processing queries.

Tableau permissions are assigned through group permission rules by content type. Setting the All Users permission-rule template to None for Project, Workbooks, Data sources, and Roles removes the group’s granted capabilities throughout that project. Tableau recommends deleting the All Users rule or setting its permission role template to None to remove permissions.

Changing Tableau Server from a local identity store to an external Active Directory identity store requires a full uninstall and reinstall, configuring the new identity-store type during installation. The identity-store type cannot be changed after it has been configured and applied.
