In Tableau, fields can be renamed in the Data pane through the field’s context menu by choosing Rename, or by clicking and holding the field name until an editable text box appears. The renamed field name is saved in Tableau without changing the underlying data-source field name.

A starts-with string function tests whether a value begins with a specified string, so its result is Boolean: true when the prefix matches and false otherwise. By contrast, FIND returns a position, and CHAR and UPPER return text.

In Tableau, continuous fields are green, and placing a continuous field—including a continuous date—on the Rows shelf creates a quantitative axis. Discrete fields are blue and create headers or labels instead.

In Tableau, a default aggregation is configured for a measure and is automatically applied when the measure is added to a view. Calculated fields that already contain an aggregation cannot have a default aggregation set.

Joins are created in the physical layer of a Tableau data source. Double-clicking a logical table opens its Join/Union canvas, where physical tables can be added and configured as joins; tables in the top-level logical layer are combined with relationships instead.

Tableau provides tooltip text formatting through the Edit Tooltip dialog box, available from the Marks card’s Tooltip control or through Worksheet > Tooltip. The Format > Font menu also includes font settings for the Tooltip field, where bold can be applied. Tableau’s Ctrl+B shortcut changes cell size rather than bolding tooltip text.

A Tableau story is a sequence of sheets, and each individual sheet in that story is a story point. A story point can be based on a view or dashboard.

A combined, shared axis is created by dropping an additional measure onto an existing axis in the view. With the first measure placed on the Rows shelf, that existing axis is the vertical axis. Tableau documents that dragging a measure onto an existing axis blends multiple measures into one shared axis.

A Tableau packaged workbook can include supporting local resources, including background images, custom shapes, and Tableau extract files. It does not package a PDF version of the workbook or Tableau Datasource Customization (TDC) files.

Tableau relationships keep related logical tables separate in the data source and preserve each table’s native level of detail. Tableau determines appropriate joins during analysis based on the fields used, which helps avoid duplicated records that can occur when physical tables at different levels of detail are joined.

A simple Tableau scatter plot compares two numerical measures, with one measure on the Columns shelf and one measure on the Rows shelf. Dimensions are optional and can be used to add detail to the marks.

Tableau parameter actions let users change parameter values through interaction with a visualization, and set actions change the values contained in an existing set. Groups and bins are not value targets for dashboard actions.

In Tableau, blue indicates a discrete field. A discrete measure and a discrete dimension are therefore shown in blue, while continuous fields are green.

Tableau provides dimension filter modes including Multiple Values (Dropdown), which lets users select several dimension members from a drop-down list, and Wildcard Match, which selects dimension values matching a text pattern. Range of Values is a filter mode for measures rather than dimensions.
