ONTAP mirrors acknowledged but uncommitted writes to the HA partner’s NVRAM. When a partner takes over a node—whether through negotiated takeover or after the node loses power—it replays the mirrored NVRAM contents through WAFL and RAID so those acknowledged writes are committed to disk.
