You are configuring and securing a network environment.

A user-defined route can force traffic to a network virtual appliance by setting VM1 as the virtual-appliance next hop. A default route with the 0.0.0.0/0 address prefix directs all matching traffic through that appliance. Network security groups filter traffic rather than route it, and system routes are Azure-managed default routes.
