SQL Server availability groups on Azure VMs can avoid both an Azure Load Balancer and a distributed network name by placing the replica VMs in multiple subnets within the same virtual network. The availability-group listener is then configured with an IP address for each subnet, allowing it to route connections to the active replica without those extra components. Using one virtual network also avoids the added cost and complexity of separate virtual networks.
