In an Apstra-managed IP fabric, a generic system whose intent-based links attach directly to the fabric's own leaf switches (for example dual-homed to one leaf via a single link and to another via an ESI-LAG pair) represents a server or appliance hosted inside the fabric and is classified as an internal generic system. An external generic system instead models a device attached at the fabric boundary, such as a router or upstream network reachable through a border leaf, for connectivity leaving the fabric, which does not match a node whose links terminate on ordinary rack leaf switches.
