A rogue ONU can transmit upstream outside its allocated TDMA time slot, interfering with other ONUs that share the PON port and causing them to go offline. Huawei documents that a rogue ONT affects other ONUs and can prevent offline ONTs from coming online.

An ONU cannot successfully apply configuration parameters beyond its supported capabilities. OMCI configuration management identifies ONU capabilities, and an ONU rejects unsupported configuration attempts; consequently, a configuration exceeding those capabilities has a failed status.

Multicast IPTV admission is controlled separately from ordinary internet connectivity. A PON port with insufficient multicast bandwidth, including bandwidth consumed by prejoined programs, cannot admit additional multicast streams. Program-viewing permissions can deny a requested channel, and a blocked multicast user is prevented from ordering programs until unblocked.

PC and UPC connectors have compatible physical-contact end-face geometry. APC connectors have an angled polish, so mating an APC connector with a PC connector is incompatible and can cause poor optical performance or damage.

GPON Type B single-homing protection is intended to switch for faults affecting the active OLT PON port or the shared feeder fiber, including feeder-path quality deterioration and a feeder-fiber cut. One offline ONU on a splitter is an individual ONU or branch-side condition, not a shared PON failure, so it does not trigger the protection switchover.

SIP voice service requires the ONU’s SIP interface to communicate with and register to the IMS. If the route from the ONU to the IMS is unreachable, that signaling path cannot be established and dial tone may not be provided. Huawei’s troubleshooting guidance identifies SIP-interface failure to register with the IMS as a no-tone condition and distinguishes the MG interface as the H.248 case.

For this OLT deployment cost model, a 5 km coverage radius provides the optimal trade-off between OLT-site investment and the cost of extending the optical distribution network.

Terminal selection must align with the network construction mode, cost constraints, special requirements, and the project’s requirements. A principle stating that project requirements need not be considered is therefore incorrect.

VLAN planning for an OLT/PON network must account for available VLAN capacity, service separation, subscriber and customer isolation at the required scale, VLAN handling toward the upstream network, and the OLT’s topology. These factors determine VLAN allocation and how service traffic is mapped and transported across ONU, OLT, and uplink interfaces.

GPON traffic policing can be applied through CAR at the flow, T-CONT, and GEM-port levels. GEM mapping defines how services are associated with GEM ports, rather than imposing traffic control by itself.

Priority Queuing (PQ) is used for high-priority services because it serves packets in the highest-priority queue before servicing lower-priority queues, minimizing delay for that traffic class.

A direct fiber connection requires compatible connector interfaces and matching end-face polish. SC/UPC connectors have the same SC mating interface and the same UPC polish, providing the appropriate matched connection. APC, UPC, and PC polish types have different end-face geometries and reflectance characteristics; APC should not be directly mated with UPC, and PC is distinguished from UPC as a different polish/application type. LC and SC are also different connector interfaces. Corning identifies PC, UPC, and APC as distinct polish types and specifies PC for multimode and UPC for single-mode connectors.

Cascaded splitter ratios multiply. Splitters with ratios of 1:2, 1:2, and 1:8 produce an overall ratio of 1:32, which is within a maximum permitted ratio of 1:64.

Centralized splitting concentrates splitters at one location and therefore requires more optical fiber runs to serve endpoints. Distributed splitting moves splitting closer to subscribers, which reduces cable requirements but increases the number of field connection devices, including fiber distribution boxes.

Access-device reliability is delivered across the hardware, software, PON access-line, and uplink/network layers. It includes redundant device components, software fault isolation and in-service upgrades, GPON Type B/Type C protection, and uplink protection such as link aggregation and dual-homing.

APC polishing uses an angled fiber end face, whereas PC and UPC use non-angled physical-contact end faces. APC must not be directly mated to PC or UPC because the mismatched geometry causes poor optical contact and may damage the connector end faces. LC and SC are distinct connector interfaces, so they cannot directly mate. PC and UPC are compatible non-angled physical-contact polishes within the same SC interface.

A common VLAN is used as the management VLAN for network-management traffic. QinQ and stacking provide VLAN-tag encapsulation functions, while Smart describes a different VLAN type rather than the management VLAN attribute.

In a POL architecture, the OLT is the central aggregation device and the ONU is the user-side terminal that provides access interfaces. Full-fiber PON access replaces the conventional aggregation and access switching tiers, allowing OLTs to be positioned with or near the core layer and ONUs to be deployed close to endpoints.

Internet access is generally provisioned as a best-effort service. In GPON DBA planning, Type 4 provides best-effort bandwidth, whereas the other listed types reserve fixed or assured bandwidth.

An ONT matching status of mismatch indicates that its actual capability differs from the bound service profile. This status does not affect normal service-flow forwarding, so it does not inherently make the services carried on the ONT unavailable. Huawei: Fault Identification and Demarcation

Manual and automatic performance-data dumping both export qualifying performance records from the NCE database into files stored on the local disk. Manual dumping is initiated on demand, whereas automatic dumping is triggered by configured conditions or thresholds.

eSight automatic discovery can use network-segment, ARP, and routing-based methods. Network segments and device IP addresses placed on the exclusion list are omitted during automatic discovery.

Optical splitters are passive PON components and do not provide management information for automatic discovery or report cabling changes. Their topology information must therefore be maintained manually when connections change. eSight supports manual link creation, so an optical splitter and its connections to an OLT and ONU can be added manually.
