SmartTier preferentially writes new user data to the performance tier and identifies infrequently accessed data as cold data for migration to the capacity tier. When performance-tier utilization reaches the relevant threshold, background migration moves cold data down to make room for hot data. In a two-tier pool, the performance and capacity tiers are independently configured, including their disk types and RAID policies.
