The Pyramid of Pain ranks indicator types by the level of difficulty (pain) they cause adversaries when defenders detect and block them. At the top of the pyramid are Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs), which represent the fundamental behaviors and methodologies an attacker uses. Because TTPs are deeply embedded in an adversary's operational tradecraft, changing them requires significant retraining, retooling, and process changes, making them the hardest and most costly element for threat actors to alter—unlike IP addresses, domain names, or tools, which sit lower on the pyramid and can be swapped out relatively easily.
