QuestionQ944

Network Fundamentals

How does frame switching operate on a switch?

  • A rewrites the source and destination MAC address
  • B forwards frames to a neighbor port using CDP
  • C forwards known destinations to the destination port
  • D is disabled by default on all interfaces and VLANs
Explanation

A Layer 2 switch uses the destination MAC address in an incoming Ethernet frame to make a forwarding decision. After learning MAC-to-port mappings, it sends frames with known destination MAC addresses only out the port associated with that destination. It does not use CDP to forward traffic, and ordinary switching does not mean rewriting both source and destination MAC addresses.
