independent basic service set
infrastructure mode
SSID

entire wireless cell of an access point and the linkage to the wired network
Explanation

In 802.11 terminology, an SSID is the character string that names a WLAN. An IBSS is an ad hoc network where stations communicate directly and do not use a central access point or distribution system. Infrastructure mode uses access points. An ESS is formed by multiple interconnected BSSs/cells, typically through a distribution system. The distribution system provides the linkage between an access point’s wireless cell and the wired network, and interconnects access points in a larger WLAN.
