Initial 5G NSA networks use the Option 3 family, in which LTE/EPC remains the anchor and NR is added through E-UTRA–NR dual connectivity. Option 3x is the commonly deployed variant, using an SCG split bearer; it enabled early 5G deployments before standalone and later migration options.
