QuestionQ55

Infrastructure

A customer attempts to access an SMB share using \\hostname\sharename, but the client cannot connect. When the customer uses the IP address rather than the hostname, the connection succeeds.

What is causing this issue?

Explanation

Unreachable NTP servers can allow ONTAP time to drift beyond the Active Directory Kerberos tolerance, preventing Kerberos authentication for SMB access by the CIFS server name. NetApp requires the cluster time to be synchronized within five minutes of the Active Directory domain controller. A CIFS LIF migration is intended to preserve connectivity by moving the LIF to another physical port.
