Microsoft's own OCR guidance draws a direct line between the input type and the recommended service: general, in-the-wild images such as labels, street signs, and posters should use the Azure Vision Read OCR API, while digital and scanned text-heavy documents such as books, articles, and reports should use the Document Intelligence Read model, which is purpose-built and optimized for automating intelligent document processing at scale with an asynchronous API. A million scanned magazine articles is exactly the text-heavy, document-scale scenario Document Intelligence targets, and using its prebuilt Read model requires only calling a managed API rather than building custom OCR pipeline logic, which minimizes development effort compared to lower-level image APIs.
