Microsoft 365 Copilot inherits and surfaces content according to a tenant's existing permission and sharing configuration. When an organization has weak data governance — such as oversharing, missing sensitivity labels, or stale permissions — Copilot's ability to retrieve and summarize content across Microsoft 365 will expose and amplify those pre-existing gaps, making this a genuine risk highlighted in Microsoft's Copilot data-readiness guidance. Rolling out Copilot is not cost-reducing for data management; organizations must invest in preparing their data estate (SharePoint Advanced Management, Purview sensitivity labeling, access reviews, oversharing remediation) on top of Copilot licensing costs, so data management costs increase rather than decrease. Finally, Microsoft 365 Copilot integrates with Microsoft Purview and the Copilot Control System, which provide IT and security teams with auditing, oversharing insights, sensitivity-label enforcement, and remediation recommendations, directly helping them manage and mitigate data risks tied to Copilot usage.
