A benchmark establishes the baseline or current state of a process or metric, which is essential before any meaningful measurement of efficiency or improvement can occur. It provides the reference point against which future performance data is compared to determine whether a process is improving, declining, or stable. This differs from a lead indicator, which predicts future outcomes rather than describing the present state, and from the internal process perspective, which is a categorization lens (as in a Balanced Scorecard) rather than a mechanism for capturing current status.
