QuestionQ15

Troubleshoot VMware-based Infrastructure Solutions

You recently deployed new HPE Alletra 6000 arrays in a customer’s datacenter. The arrays host VMFS datastores for the customer’s VMware environment.

The upgrade is not delivering the expected performance increase. Tests show that both read and write I/Os have risen, compared with pre-upgrade, for almost all VMs.

Which performance policy is selected, and does it align with VMware?

Explanation

On HPE Alletra 6000/Nimble storage, a performance policy determines the volume block size as well as relevant caching and data-reduction settings. The predefined VMware ESX policy uses a 4 KiB block size. A block size that is not aligned with the VMware workload can create inefficient or additional I/O, so the array block size and its alignment with VMware settings should be checked. HPE documents that performance policies define block size and that VMware ESX uses 4096-byte blocks.
